Today’s Thought “Apocalypse Now?” G. Ward

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Matthew 28:18

Sixteen states bombarded with potential blizzard conditions before Christmas. Potential tax hikes for every American (i.e. fiscal cliff). Newtown, Connecticut plagued with massive killing. Atlanta Falcons potential Superbowl contenders… Could December 21, 2012 be the end?

Although Jesus’ authoritatively proclaiming Himself as Author is throughout His word (cf. Mt.28:18, 24:36), mankind seemingly prefers a Mayan Calendar’s synopsis. Rather than formulate cynical castigation of the problem in periodic predictions of the end, I’d much rather re-introduce believer’s compelling to share the good news of the kingdom. This apocalyptic fear among unbelievers is two-fold; 1. Fear as to fright. 2. Fear as synonymous with reverence.

I say scare the literal hell out of them (yes, this hyperbole is necessary) by demanding their acceptance or denial of such a Wonderful Savior. The Prophet Joel prophesied Israel's restoration (cf. Joel 2:28-29). There would be an indeterminate period when God will pour out his Spirit on all flesh, when no distinctions will be made between classes or ranks of people, when even servants, menservants, and maidservants shall speak as the voice of God. They shall speak the word of God, as God pours out his Spirit upon all kinds of men everywhere. This pouring out is the very empowerment necessary to be very excellent witnesses (Ac.1:8) of Calvary’s expression of love for the entirety of mankind (Jn.3:16).

Take total advantage of this time of heresy to proclaim “Truth (Jn.14:6),” as HE is the Person of Jesus! Happy Friday!

Today’s Thought “Out of Bounds” G. Ward

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.”
Psalm 1:2

The older I become from a spiritual realm, the more I assess my being effectual and productive. The regenerative transformation granted me (i.e. grace and mercy) calls for an immediate servitude. I had (in the span of my life) an equal amount of years as an unbeliever vs. believer, so my empathizing with the perplexity demonstrated by the un-churched concerning the inactivity (hypocrisy) of the churched is vivid. In difficult times, there appears to be no disparity between the believers or unbelievers. The gossip and intolerance, generally reigns supreme from those never missing church. Moreover, the churched have as much or more un-reconciled behaviors from their family members (e.g. – the preacher’s kid), because their self-absorption forgot, “No one is righteous, not one” (Ro.3:10)! Furthermore, if believers stump their toe, expletives excrete naturally so from both factions.

Then, there’s that church setting; no one is spirited when the theologian renders an opening statement of encouragement (e.g. “The Lord is good, and His mercy endures forever!”), oh but when the music starts, activity reigns like the old episodes of Tarzan, watching him unilaterally whipping 200 + African bushmen. What about their hearing? Whenever they view a religious telecast, the sermons always affirm my coming out of a circumstance I caused and expecting Holy God’s immediate rescue; therefore reducing His Holiness to a mere genie in a bottle, while cheapening grace. Rarely, if at all, do you hear about sin’s consequence of death and deprivation, but you’re most certainly sure to hear agricultural terminology exacerbated in a modernity whereby less than 1% of their listening audience are farmers vs. 90% + in bible times; thus their terminology, “sowing and reaping a harvest” (go to internet resources and view the wealth of every preacher you listen to and ask, How much is enough?). Why then are we perplexed on the many that don’t/won’t attend church?
From the empathy I have for the unbeliever’s defiance, I believe they just want Big Momma’s religion; desiring to see salvation vs. being bombarded with more religiosity… Happy Wednesday!

Today’s Thought “Breakthrough” G.Ward

“Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away.” James 1:9-10

The local church’s composition is an excellent barometer in substantiating Holy God’s love for mankind (cf. Jn.3:16). Rarely, particularly in our grasp, is an ideology (i.e. the gospel) unattainable for man via money or tremendous work. The message of the cross is such a message that transcends economic or social plights pursued. Holy God certainly must not take issue with the wealthy; He most certainly established many in times past with great riches. We however, can neglect seeing His great care for the impoverished in the same (cf. 2 Ki.4:1-7), due to our insatiable desire to have more stuff.

I don’t write today to promote an unnecessary debate that could demand fiscal accountability for the rich or poor, but to implore fellow believers to indiscriminately seek the lost in a season that promotes receptivity for every man. We’ve viewed (biblically) many illustrations of rich and poor identifying God’s grace beyond tangibles. It’s time to remove the obstructions that keep us sharing Christ in our limited circles of culture, race or socio-economic background. One thing is for sure; everyone needs the LORD!

Go, Tell It On The Mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go, Tell It On The Mountain
That Jesus Christ is born!

Happy Tuesday!

Today’s Thought “Internal Conflict” G. Ward

Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." And they were amazed at him.” Mark 12:17

People movin' out People movin' in
Why, because of the color of their skin
Run, run, run, but you sho' can't hide
An eye for an eye
A tooth for a tooth
Vote for me, and I'll set you free
Rap on brother, rap on
Well, the only person talkin'
'Bout love thy brother is the preacher
And it seems,
Nobody is interested in learnin'
But the teacher
Segregation, determination, demonstration,
Integration, aggravation,
Humiliation, obligation to our nation
Ball of Confusion
That's what the world is today

The sale of pills are at an all time high
Young folks walk around with
Their heads in the sky
Cities aflame in the summer time
And, the beat goes on

Air pollution, revolution, gun control,
Sound of soul
Shootin' rockets to the moon
Kids growin' up too soon
Politicians say more taxes will
Solve everything
And the band played on
So round 'n' round 'n' round we go
Where the world's headed, nobody knows
Just a Ball of Confusion
Oh yea, that's what the wold is today

Fear in the air, tension everywhere
Unemployment rising fast,
The Beatles' new record's a gas
And the only safe place to live is
On an indian reservation
And the band played on
Eve of destruction, tax deduction
City inspectors, bill collectors
Mod clothes in demand,
Population out of hand
Suicide, too many bills, hippies movin'
To the hills
People all over the world, are shoutin'
End the war
And the band played on.

The gyrating that took place on the dance floor in 1970 (from Motown’s (my hometown) Temptations most outstanding lyrical expression of a chaotic era in America), had my siblings and me participating greatly. The rhythmic drum and bass line demanded immediate motion from those good at dancing. I’ll need for you to know, this excluded my brother. He mainly acted as the disc jockey. Later in life he perfected moves esoteric to his little world.

Furthermore, these lyrics promoted a cadence indicative of the title of the song; “Ball of Confusion.” Sadly, inasmuch as this genre in music was relative to social change (or the violation thereof), forty plus years later, its relevance exists. We’ve neglected to excel due to our reliance on a system (perhaps governmental, religious or social), to effectuate needed change. Jesus, our Lord was strongly opposed to all three. Contrary to popular belief, HE was never an Agent for social change, nor did He have problems with government (cf. Ro.13:1), but didn’t regard as synonymous with eternal matters and He most certainly abhorred religion. We’ll progress only when deciding that Holy God is Sufficient for every era, by surrendering to His perfect will over our very own (Lk.22:42). Until then, And the band played on.  Happy Monday!

Today’s Thought “Ungrateful” G. Ward
“But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come.  For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy.” 2 Timothy 3:1-2
Unlike the many stories of the aged, I’m without an expression of having grown up poor. Moreover, I don’t have a story to share with young people that would relay how walking 5 miles one way to school in the snow was the norm (it sounds particularly foolish if you grew up in south Florida). I do however desire empathizing with children and young people regarding their expressions of appreciation for the gifts soon to be presented at Christmas.
Growing up, my Mother found it necessary to expend astronomical amounts of money to satisfy my siblings and me. Most everything requested, we received. Sales papers in those days were included in every daily newspaper (not just with the weekend paper), so our lists would grow rapidly. There however, was always something we neglected. Year after year I would always forget asking for Mattel’s Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots; so I purchased this for myself some five years ago. All the anticipation in having this quickly diminished upon opening the packaging. I immediately equated that with how a child appreciates the many gifts presented at Christmas time. Think back, at 10 years old, did you really appreciate the sweater Grandmother purchased? Of course not!
Amazingly, we have our children recite their thanks to whoever the presenter might be. Although with the appearances of disingenuous, it greatly promotes a potential reconciliation with true thankfulness in latter times for the child. This traditional act in reciting thanks is becoming a thing of the past. New generations of parenting allow for their little ones to absolutely stand lethargically un-enthralled while adults speak to them to get no response back; while foolishly contending with the defense mechanisms offered by parents, perverting the shyness of their children as acceptable. We were all shy in times past, but we still had to verbalize thanks! Happy Friday!

Today’s Thought “Inconceivable” G. Ward
But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?” Luke 23:40
In the faith, our greatest illustration of redemption stems from the recognition given to the Savior (as HE hung on the cross) by a common thief. Like the thief, our blatant refusal in adhering to righteousness may deliver us unto dire straits (Ro.6:23). There however remains a recompense for man, transcendent of our violation. His inability to pursue it with a righteous behavior is impossible (Eph.2:8). Individuals, once lost, then reconciled are called to escort others to the mercy seat where Holy God is (How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” Ro.10:14).
Why then do we continue expressions of cover-up that leave outsiders of faith to be devoured? It’s entirely up to you to cease inviting them to your church, with all its special programming. Assume Sunday won’t get here and take them straight to Jesus. Allow them to see the relationship you have with the greatest KING. Close your eyes and insist they do the same. Greet our Blessed Savior, and then introduce your potential brother/sister, sharing with the Master their desire to be saved. Have them recognize their sin condition by seeking an immediate restoration. Upon His merciful guarantee that salvation is theirs, take over the session once again by praising His delivering the both of you unto Himself. Truly our Sufficient King is merciful and ultimately we know Him in part (1 Co.13:9), but His words share insights about the activity of a believer (cf. Lk.6:43, Jn.15:5, Gal.5:19-21). Walk with your new brother/sister until they become more foundational and able to stand with Jesus alone. Don’t place time constraints on that new relationship. How long did it take for the baby you birthed to walk/talk? Happy Thursday!

Today’s Thought I Can’t Wait Till Christmas G.Ward

A time to give birth and a time to die;
A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.”
Ecclesiastes 3:2

On yesterday, I attended a most excellent homegoing service for an old friend that quickly diminished any portrayal of great sadness because of the trust he had in the Savior. The eulogist magnificently exposed Psalm 116:15, Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His saints.”

We’ve heard it perhaps many times; as life is given, there’s a surety in death. Funerals have exacerbated a notion of utter despair. While sad music blasts over the sound system in our auditoriums, family members march in to see the remains of a loved one. The tears naturally flow from their sockets, agonizing life’s journey without a relative or friend. Rarely, (if at all) do we hear terrible testifying about the deceased. Moreover, many un-seasoned theologians preach universalist messages that demand everyone goes to a better place, making eternal separation from Holy God allegory vs. actual. No one really desires embellishing the uncertainty of a potential soul’s connectivity to God while they were living, theirs is merely hopeful, making their expression a common approach.

Getting back to this service on yesterday; the many commentaries given echoed a better altruism. The deceased was passionate about souls (indiscriminately so). His approach was synonymous with Jesus’ (cf. Mt.9:36). It was said and witnessed personally, that he would begin first by praying for the lost and then indifferent from most that testify, “I know Him,” his proactivity insisted they verbalize rejection or acceptance of the Savior’s love. Wanting to hear, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” (Mt.25:21), means that we first must become busy with the cause of Christ (Mt.28:18-20). Ours has mostly been anticipating worship’s opportunity for the great and mighty things He has done for us (i.e. “I can’t wait till Sunday!”). Why don’t you do something for HIM? Happy Wednesday!

Today's Thought
"He's Just Not That Into You" G. Ward

"For by the grace given me, I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you." Romans 12:3

In 2009 the world was exposed to a romantic comedy film expressive of "He's Just Not That Into You." This film grossed in excess of $180 million. It's success more than likely stemmed from relating primarily to the complexities offered in discerning the lack of reciprocity in romantic relationships (i.e. Why is it that he doesn't bring me flowers anymore?).
This dramatic interpretation is transcendent of romantic fellowship; the opportunity to view this kaleidoscopically should become everyone's cross to bear. Rather than becoming super analytical as to indifference, ours should be a near future denial (cf. Mt.16:24) of carnality raising its ugly head in determining that any endeavor (particularly those not administered by Sufficiency = Jn.15:5) would have success without proper leadership. Why on earth call Him Lord, if we're not willing to let Him reign supreme?
One thing believers should seek; a blessed assurance that confirms, although man may not be enthralled about who you are, the Savior never left and is Faithful! Happy Tuesday!

Today’s Thought “Imposing Philosophies” G.Ward
“One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.” Romans 14:5
In America we celebrate the many television commercials that accompany our favorite programs. Many would love to think of themselves as impervious to purchasing the item(s) represented. Moreover, they boast on never succumbing to the monotony of the holiday season by limiting their spending to a certain amount. That implies that the commercial’s intent was to solely exploit the commercialization of its product only for the month of December vs., attacking one’s subliminal conscious for every season represented. Let’s offer a brief test. When or if considering the purchase of fine jewelry, who might you consider? Yes, Kay, Zales or Jared, here you come! It’s because they’re the preponderant messenger for jewels. Now some of you are so entirely rebellious that you’ll name some mom or pop operation just to prove me wrong; but all I have to do is follow you home to see a plethora of cleaning products to view adherence to this kind of messaging.
More important to enact, is a responsibility towards impacting others (in this month) whereby most are particularly vulnerable to the expression “tis the season to be jolly…” We can do this best by purposely engaging them on how they plan on keeping the Christ (preeminent) in every portrayal of gathering and gift exchange. Furthermore, our prefacing this potential dialogue must first introduce our course of action, by admittance to prior failure in doing what’s best. Happy Monday!

Today’s Thought “I’ll Go!” G. Ward
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8

Without hesitance believers are prepared to suggest that “glory and honor belong to God.” Like Isaiah, although counting it a privilege to serve, there certainly might be greater reluctance if we knew that many wouldn’t heed the words delivered (Isa.6:9-11).
Our calling to fulfill shouldn’t count the cost of obedience, nor should it estimate a benefit. Recollection of the tender mercies received (from Holy God) should resonate with every believer enough that an immediate need to reciprocate takes place. Many patriarchs of the faith surrendered to service without knowing the outcome would be precarious; 32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets,
33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. 35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again. There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. 36 Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. 37 They were put to death by stoning; they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated— 38 the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and in holes in the ground.39 These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, 40 since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect (Hebrews 11:32-40).
Will you still go? Happy Thursday!

Today’s Thought O Holy Night G. Ward
“And to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come.
1 Thessalonians 1:10
This season fails miserably in the portrayal of Christmas. Our Americanism insists on the expression, “Merry Christmas” vs. “Happy Holidays” as a substitution for the promulgation of who Jesus is. Furthermore, we’re terribly embittered at what society permits, particularly as the obliteration of what was regarded as common (expressions) diminishes. Our castigations pompously suggest we had nothing to do with the political hyperbole unbelievers raise, when in actuality it’s very much our fault. Our message of reconciliation (i.e. the gospel), is by far the best. So why are we failing to deliver it? It’s probably due to our common expression; lazy and un-thoughtful, while insatiably singing, “I Know My Redeemer Lives…” Happy Wednesday!

Today’s Thought Familiarity as Contemptuous G. Ward
When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of harlotry and have children of harlotry; for the land commits flagrant harlotry, forsaking the Lord.”
Hosea 1:2
The estimation from man unto knowing Holy God mostly derives from mortal relationships established. We understand the way to trust is that developmental process regarded through quantitative measurements. As we embrace God’s word however, we’re reminded of a principle neglected by everyone, faith. Our estimations and regarding process is entirely antithetical to; “For we walk by faith, not by sight
(2 Co.5:7) and “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Heb.11:1).
Holy God’s word is filled with the miraculous and desires our pursuit of Him be without worldly parameters. Our unnecessary ploys of counting costs or outcome epitomize mistrust. Furthermore, our contemplations that place demands on Holy God for safety (as we endeavor His will), discounts the peril Paul, Peter, John the Baptist, Our Savior, etc., as they sought ministry.
Our saying yes to His will may not have the packaging we’ve been privy to; as Hosea’s compelling reveals. If you desire Holy God receiving the glory, just do it! Happy Tuesday!

Today’s Thought Assembling Scoundrels G. Ward
Elisha said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look at you nor see you.
2 Kings 3:14
The Prophet Elisha directed this observation to Israel’s king (Jehoram) as a result of his last resort consultation with Holy God to war against Moab. Israel’s king sought impetuously to defeat Moab and their king due to him disregarding a debt owed to his deceased father King Ahab. Moreover, he (King Jehoram) without contemplation thought of himself too highly due to the war alliance established with Judah’s King Jehoshaphat and the King of Edom.
I’ve viewed many throughout my lifetime celebrating camaraderie with those who appear as principled pillars (particularly in the spiritual community), when in actuality they’re suffering as spine-less jellyfish when crisis arrives. Considering the warfare of life as perpetual (cf. Ro.7:15), demands that Holy God be our very first consultation and insists my implicit trust of HIM even when others fail to show. HE’s Faithful. Happy Monday!

Today’s Thought What a Fellowship G. Ward
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
An English poet from the 17th century (John Donne) graciously constructed a most excellent proverbial expression of the interdependence meant for mankind. His sought to establish a reiteration for some, while yet revealing to others the brevity of life’s journey. Intellectually, many understand their time in earth as short, while the practicality of viewing oneself as deceased goes diminished due to unfamiliarity with passing from this life unto eternity. I’m convinced that if contemplated more often, many will begin to seize more peace and joy from each day vs. worrying about the uncontrollable.
Unfortunately, subliminal messaging from others determined to hermitize (e.g. “I don’t need anyone!”) themselves from so many obstructs our better application of knowing the impossibility of achieving greatness apart from someone helping.
Happy Friday!
No Man Is An Island
No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

Today’s Thought Common Expressions that Could Lead to Heresy G.Ward

“And they wandered about from nation to nation,
And from one kingdom to another people,
He permitted no man to oppress them,

And He reproved kings for their sakes, saying,
“Do not touch My anointed ones,

And do My prophets no harm.”
1 Chronicles 16:20-22

A youthful King David, although like many of us, plagued with selfish will, desired to exalt the LORD for not only Holy God enabling him, but (as witnessed in 1 Chronicles 16) also His protection  for the ancestry once enslaved, then given over to a new land. This protection given was indicative of the promises established first through Moses, then Joshua. Moreover, it was entirely esoteric to those chosen ones in Egypt once in bondage.

Modern day theologians have run absolutely amok in exacerbating a notion that demand Holy God’s protection because of an appointment. Songwriters have composed melodies of heresy that distort meaningful passages like those found in Isaiah 54:17, “No weapon forged against me shall prosper…” Clearly and prophetically this was a hope unto future prosperity as once experienced by God’s own; but those hearing Isaiah’s message then would be absolutely troubled for a long time. What about the disingenuous craze that disenfranchises Jabez’s prayer at 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 that pleads, “Enlarge my territory?”  Let’s be reminded of the stated nobility of Jabez that solely desired exacting the message of Holy God and continues to be synonymous with King Solomon given wisdom to remain in the parameters to lead a people.

Our constant adherence to traditional sayings loves the world’s standards and denies intimacy with Holy God as attainable. Last night’s Powerball purse of over 500 million indicates our insatiability to please ourselves (cf.Mt.16:24). Rather than perpetuating self-absorption, seek today to echo the sentiment of the Savior, “Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will. Happy Thursday!

Today’s Thought Preparing for the Commission G.Ward

“Then David called for Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab,  and said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers’ households of the Levites; consecrate yourselves both you and your relatives, that you may bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel to the place that I have prepared for it.” 1 Chronicles 15:11-12

The ministerial assignment from Holy God is never to be regarded as either an arduous task or ordinary. It must first stem from tremendous appreciation from the mighty acts of God in our life. In the lives of many involved (Pastors-Teachers, Ushers, Choir Members, etc.), the vain contemplations of their mindsets more regard notoriety than sacrifice; therefore, a great murmuring resonates throughout the corridors in our temples, allowing others (lacking spiritual maturity) to perpetuate the phraseology most abused in Christian dialogue – hypocrite. Although these promptings from others may be true, it most certainly conveys a false premise in thinking there is someone able to attain towards a life void of hypocrisy (cf. Ro.3:10, 23). Biblical hypocrisy is merely indicative of one who pretends. Our will exercised over what we know as perfect will, pretends we’re greater in power than our Creator (cf.Jn.15:5b). If this becomes a paradigm widely regarded by unbelieving factions, then how will many come to know Him as Lord? Happy Wednesday!

Today’s Thought “The Absolute Best” G. Ward
Then the Lord called to Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting, saying, “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, When any man of you brings an offering to the Lord, you shall bring your offering of animals from the herd or the flock.  If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he shall offer it, a male without defect; he shall offer it at the doorway of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted before the Lord.” Leviticus 1:1-3
Have you noticed upon visiting churches their perspective on times of offering? Some make it a ceremony within the boundaries of worship services, while others categorize it as the most important segment to attending church. Personally, I’ve been to numerous churches to view this segment as entirely un-appealing and super invasive. On many occasions, I’ve viewed both Deacons and Ministers beg incessantly for more; even up to mis-quoting and de-contextualizing passages to bolster more funding. You would think that leadership as submission to unadulterated doctrine would be pervasive enough to hear a scriptural sentiment found in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
*Greed obscures truth, thus circumventing rational thoughts that would lead to proper discourses. Our perspective should always be considerate of a member(s) of an audience that could be unfamiliar with supporting a local congregation. Sharing the good news (i.e. the gospel) is the panacea for not knowing how much one should render, and although a repentant heart in the moment of realizing Holy God’s loving them can be resolved immediately (cf.Eph.3:20-21), the process in learning truer reciprocity must be regarded.
The problem perpetuated by the local church is making the preaching point (11 a.m. services) the culminating factoring in the lives of believers vs. discipleship (i.e. equipping – Eph.4:12), that demands altruism from every believer, outside the realm of a great crowd. We’re often viewed as un-blemished while amidst many that seemingly desire Jesus as Lord, yet in our heart, particularly when contrasted with the greatest sacrifice given, must question whether or not ours is the absolute best… Happy Tuesday!

Today’s Thought Honor, Without Regard G. Ward
Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother named him Jabez saying, “Because I bore him with pain.”
Now Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from harm that it may not pain me!” And God granted him what he requested.1 Chronicles 4:9-10

Pastor Bruce Wilkerson is best known for his best-selling (and, in some circles, highly controversial) book The Prayer of Jabez in 2000. This particular manuscript highlighted this prayer unto many that would perhaps have been overlooked by those pursuant to reading God’s word. Unfortunately, so many solely embraced Jabez’s cry of “Enlarge my territory,” leaving a prefacing paramount to a potential blessing behind. Jabez was recognized as being more honorable. Furthermore, it is conjectured by Jabez that glory and honor unto Holy God would be the end result.
Since this manuscript’s production, insatiably driven believers have developed songs, vain philosophies and pseudo spiritual paraphernalia to designate blessings un-sought by God’s children. It’s a dirty, lowdown shame when our Savior had to prevail upon earth 42 generations of disconnect and blatant disregard from man unto Holy God’s righteousness, to then decide that the entirety of scripture given was so we could have what we desire over what He desires. Moreover, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Mt.6:19-21). Sadly, that meant nothing to some! Immediately their rebuttal strongly suggests, “Yeah, but…” If God’s word won’t convince you, then who am I? Happy Thursday!

Today’s Thought Postmodern Contemplations G. Ward
“You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth?
This persuasion did not come from Him who calls you.  A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough.” Galatians 5:7-9
Today I pursued my annual physical examination. I awakened, prepared to dispel a militant stance of the gospel as a result in watching a televangelist mix truth with deception so very early in the morning. Then I arrived at the doctor’s office whereby he exclaimed, “Mr. Ward, I believe it’s time for your annual prostate exam!” First, why was he so enthusiastic? Second, why didn’t he dim the lights and turn on some soft music? Third, my militancy has been reduced to softer, kinder, expressions…
My question on today concerns our grandparents and those inhabitants of third world nations. You’ve heard about them haven’t you? Well apparently quite a large percentage of televangelists have not. Most are busy with narcissistic words that exacerbate a notion that Holy God exists to establish Americans in better health and more favor that would lead to more money. Immediately, charismatics want to refer to me as a heretic when I insist on proper context from the Apostle John’s letter found in 3 John: 2, “Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.
The Apostle clearly was encouraging Brother Gaius in the perpetuation of disseminating “Truth” (Jn.14:6). Moreover, this congratulation was synonymous with a blessing that would help keep him healthy in doing so and would include the necessary provisions to exact the message of the cross.
Our grandparents were perhaps new immigrants to this land, others, slaves unto it, would absolutely marvel at such a school of thought. They understood Holy God as timeless (The Ancient of Days). This new theology for them would have arrived a century or more too late. What about our third world friends? They just want some clean drinking water. Their stomachs are inflamed with poisons because they're drinking from the same troughs as the animals excrete in, and their food rations are so minimal that their bone structures are altogether too vivid, revealing severe malnourishment. Here come the charismatics in great denial by saying, God blesses us so that we can be a blessing. Unlike a snake, humans don’t philanthropically undergird a metamorphosis in their giving. If you don’t give now, you probably won’t give in future terms (even if Holy God drops bundles of currency from the sky)! The over-riding question is, when the Hebrew writer declares Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (13:8), does that ever imply His changing according to the modernity presented?

Today’s Thought Sugar and Spice G. Ward
“When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.” 1 Corinthians 13:11
I’m proud to say that my Sister has a birthday on today. There are four of us and we’re all able to recall various incidence of more than 50 years ago (that renders us “old as dirt!”). Amazingly, we all had unique personalities growing up. The sister celebrating a birthday was indicative of the Mother Goose nursery rhyme as a little girl; What are little girls made of?
Sugar and spice,
And all that's nice;
That's what little girls are made of.
As my sister got older all of our negative influences began rubbing off and you began to see some characteristics unbecoming for a young lady. I’m reminded of her early ambition in advocacy. It was Christmas time and my Brother and I received a Mattel Hot Wheel Racing Track with all the accessories. Our neighbors celebrated Hanukah (that would make them Jewish for all my challenged friends) whereby they too received the same. The entire boy faction thought to create a super version of Hot Wheel mania by placing our racing tracks together, thus making a city of fast car motion. Our interactivity (with these boys next door) was daily and so there was no ambivalence on the part of my brother nor myself in taking our track to their basement for play. As typical in that day, we were abruptly called home and prior to our departure demanded our track accompany us, in that it appeared our opportunity in returning would not occur on that day. How many know that amicable is not a word little boys are familiar with? Can you say violent argument? Mrs. Levy, our neighbor’s Mother sought to diffuse that by insisting we go home. You must remember the time; children then listened to adults without question. Upon getting home, our expression of sadness and disgust drove our sister (the un-credentialed attorney) into such a frenzy, that she felt it necessary to go next door and demand from Mrs. Levy that our portion be returned immediately. Mrs. Levy sought to correct my sister’s tone by threatening to share with our parents the blatant disrespect given by our sister. My sister, and I quote, said, “I’ll roll out the red carpet for you!”
Next scene: my brother and I weeping profusely while seeing my sister get the spanking of her life. Happy Tuesday!

Today’s Thought Regrets G. Ward
“But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 1:20
It was 5 a.m. this morning when I awakened. I prepared a most excellent cup of coffee and two pieces of toast. While sipping and eating, I began to contemplate the goodness of Holy God. I was entirely repentant for my blatant disregard of the spiritual regimen I normally experience. My prayer reflected that sorrow and I was refreshed (cf. Ac.3:19-21). Amazingly, I was immediately given an opportunity to reciprocate such a restoration comparable. Upon searching through my email I discovered a correspondence from a relative who was apologizing for some remarks she made more than six months ago that could have been construed as offensive. I assured her that no offense was taken and that my loving her meant no future apologies would ever be necessary.
Awakening each day should birth great exuberance in the lives of believers, in that it strongly substantiates His words; He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.
He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
Just as a father has compassion on his children,
So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.
For He Himself knows our frame;
He is mindful that we are but dust”
(Ps.103:9-14).
*Had Joseph been impetuous with bringing public shame on Mary, the story of Christ could have been marred, but thank God for His infinite wisdom.
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done" (Lk.22:42).
Happy Monday!

Today’s Thought Children at Play G. Ward
“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, “Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool.” Isaiah 1:18
Time has a way in revealing how uncertainty will soon be made clear. Most however, rarely are considerate of such when facing an uncertain future (dilemma obscures peaceable potential). Unknowingly, many have been perpetuators (even up to antagonism), regarding other’s ability to recover from uncertain moments. I’ll refer to this on today as an unnecessary competiveness. My eldest son (for example) was walking at 6 months old. Moreover, his vocabulary was quite extensive at 1 years and he was fully potty trained shortly thereafter (no embellishment). Many of our comrades marveled at his progression and prognosticated his future as in-ordinary, including an aptitude higher than most. Our second son (4.5 years later) demonstrated some of the same characteristics, yet didn’t desire walking until he was 14 months old and wasn’t potty trained until he was 14 (I’m kidding of course)! Today, both are equally as successful although the first group of cheerleaders diminished with the second birth. Our compelling as parents to these, determined that our guidance must continue regardless of outside factions (cf. Dt.6:4-7).
Altogether, what we discover is our pursuit in life is environmental (i.e. what we’re exposed to); if strongly encouraged while young, productivity in our later years are less arduous. As believers, we have great responsibility to help (via sharing the most excellent message of reconciliation) others see that Holy God desires (cf.2 Pe.3:9) a love relationship with them individually that supersedes our adopting the heaviness in life’s circumstances (cf. Mt.11:29-30), by considering “Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, 21 to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever” (Eph.3:20-21). Happy Friday!

Today’s Thought Usefulness G. Ward
As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Say to the servant that he might go ahead of us and pass on, but you remain standing now, that I may proclaim the word of God to you.” 1 Samuel 9:27

Did your candidate win on last evening? Like most of you, I’m certainly elated that it’s all over, win or lose. The traps of political behavior can be utterly exasperating. There is very little unity desired (politically) in a democratic society; it’s mostly a selfish conveyance of ideas imposed, isogetically (morally and ethically), that demands immediate adherence, or tags you (the non-compliant) as obtrusive to American values. Americans seemingly want to be upset with other factions (socio-economic, gender, religious, sexual orientation, culture or race) representative of America. While countries like Serbia may have practiced ethnic cleansing (a policy designed by one ethnic or religious group to purposely remove by violent and terror-inspiring means the civilian population of another ethnic or religious group from certain geographic areas), our partisan behaviors (thanks to our party system) invites a similar heresy. In America, we’re prepared to serve (via military) as a universalist police force to disable the kind of cleansing mentioned above, while yet guilty in the same kind of divisiveness; particularly contradictory when remembering our origin supports a plethora of freedom expression including religious, gender equality, sexual orientation, race and economic divide. Like you, I don’t agree with the behaviors of many involved in these group listings, but I don’t want to kill them, or have them fall off the face of the earth!
We find how necessary it is in hearing from Holy God independent of great crowds and sensationalistic cheerleaders in 1 Samuel, chapter 9. Waiting to be assigned without selfish promptings, Saul runs into the man of Holy God (Samuel the Prophet) who shared with him how God selected him to be first King unto Israel (Wow!). Saul, endeavored (1 Sa.9:3) what seemed to have been an ordinary task, to be anointed by the Prophet Samuel that same day as King. Independent of crowds, God spoke (Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.” Ro.13:1). Happy Wednesday!

Today’s Thought Geriatrical G. Ward
“Now King David was old, advanced in age; and they covered him with clothes, but he could not keep warm. So his servants said to him, “Let them seek a young virgin for my lord the king, and let her attend the king and become his nurse; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may keep warm.” So they searched for a beautiful girl throughout all the territory of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
The girl was very beautiful; and she became the king’s nurse and served him, but the king did not cohabit with her. 1 Kings 1:1-4
I was privileged to know my grandparents. They all have died, yet the memory of them is still overwhelming. All that grandparents were supposed to be (i.e. loving, encouraging, etc.) was who they were. So why am I so dysfunctional now? That’s another episode for later.
Today I want to focus in on my maternal grandfather. He was approximately six feet tall, slender and masterfully socialable. Every time he would come around, we (his grandchildren) were proud in calling him “Big Daddy.” He sought being generous towards us, but was unable because he had so many grandchildren (approx.36) and there was always so many around; particularly in a time where economic depression was rampant. We however thought of our “Big Daddy” as close to perfect. Amazingly, he gave nicknames to so many of us in accordance to how we looked; mine was Uncle John Whitfield. Apparently we had some relatives with the surname Whitfield in our genealogy. I was glad to be equated with our family in physical terms, because prior to the nickname designation, I thought they found me behind a rock or something.
The paradigm given us as children from grandparents rarely takes into account the misgivings of their youth. We see the elderly as very cognizant of extending niceties towards the many they encounter. We call them reserved because expediency is a thing of the past; retirement means slow down. Frivolity, in a general sense can’t be tolerated, because no energy drink, or any other stimulant, could incite the inducement of endorphins necessary to commit some behaviors.
That’s what happened to King David in our scripture lesson text above. It wasn’t that King David or “Big Daddy” was immune to great sin as such, Viagra wasn’t invented yet. Happy Tuesday!

Today’s Thought Hostess Snacks G. Ward
“From Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.” Psalms 119:104
Do you recall your very first time eating a Hostess Twinkie? Well, I guess you’re like the rest of us (in other terms, no.). It however, was a very compelling thing; a spongy golden cake with a marvelous surprise of sweet white delicate cream in the middle. The Hostess Company most certainly understood the compelling for more, so they inserted two cakes in one package (knowing that consuming only one was next to impossible.).
Our lives simulate the layers of the Twinkie. We often appear a particular way, until one pulls back a layer or two discovering more personality traits. Perpetuating indifference, or adversarial for example can often be a characteristic of many, until the assignee becomes open (or compassionate) towards empathizing with the supposed antagonist enough to discover that their whole life was filled with very few examples of peace, keeping them in a mode of defense.
The term dysfunctional has been tossed around to indicate that some lack resolve regarding past indifference. Personally, I’m troubled about this unnecessary designation, because I believe no one as exempt from such a status (cf. Ro.7:15-18); therefore more imperative to adopt is a merciful perspective (cf. Eph.5:1-2). The emotion expressed in the moment may be the lack of resolve in the past. Holding individuals hostage to perceived unrighteousness, mainly blocks your being blessed (cf.Mt.6:12, 14-15) and pompously suggests you’re not, nor have been a violator. Have a Happy Thursday, Ms. or Mr. Perfect!

Today’s Thought Future Terms G. Ward
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” Matthew 24:36
I present to you on today an excerpt from C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters (a satirical Christian apologetic novel first published in book form in February 1942); “We have trained them to think of the future as a promised land which favoured heroes attain, not as something which everyone reaches at a rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.” Your Affectionate Uncle Screwtape
Uncle Screwtape is regarded as a senior demon directing his energy towards further corrupting his nephew Wormwood (a junior Tempter on his way to senior evil). These provocations will inevitably fall on an innocent victim (A British man) known as the “Patient.”
If we’re not careful to pursue Holy God independent of philosophies and being captivated by eloquence, we too can fall victim to the same evil ploys. As our entry was individually marked by new life, our departure ends with judgment on whether we’re suited for eternity with Holy God, or with Screwtape, Wormwood and the fellas. I’ve heard it said, “The older I become (particularly in the Lord), the less impressed I am with man.” King David said it best; “Against You, You only, I have sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.” Psalms 51:4
Happy Wednesday!

Today’s Thought Second Fiddle G. Ward
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.” Matthew 16:24
Parents are often so hilarious when trying to convey to their young people the level of sacrifice taken by them in establishing family values. Audaciously, it’s begun so early.  Little Jenny and Billy arrive at the dollar store with a parent. Without contemplation, the parent, in looking for a particular item passes the toy aisle. Jenny and Billy yell in unison, “Please Mommy, it only costs one dollar!” Although Mother’s early expression of limited funds was made crystal clear in the car, it meant nothing against the colors presented in the toy line.
I’m reminded on the time my Dad was driving the four of us to school. My sister Sandy (not the hurricane, but close) pleaded with my Dad the urgent need for money for a particular supply. My Dad countered with the traditional response, “Sandy, I don’t have any money.” Without hesitance Sandy told Dad to write a check. Why is it that transcendent to young people not understanding depletion, grown folk are equally as troubled? All that need are forever pre-occupied with what they feel you have and find it difficult when told you’re busted; they always feel you’re hoarding the last $569,328.59 (don’t you wish?).
Our Savior shares with us the necessity in allowing Him to be the Source of every supply as a result of His sacrifice. He pleads with us to further analyze our objectives over what’s truly needed. If we’re not careful we’ll further succumb to the Dollar Store scenario (reducing ourselves to adolescent thinking) as HE accompanies us through life’s journey, while demanding from the Master of the universe, “You have more to give,  Your sacrifice isn’t enough” (cf. Jn.19:30, Heb.10:26)! Happy Tuesday!
