Today’s Thought Future Terms G. Ward
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” Matthew 24:36
I present to you on today an excerpt from C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters (a satirical Christian apologetic novel first published in book form in February 1942); “We have trained them to think of the future as a promised land which favoured heroes attain, not as something which everyone reaches at a rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.” Your Affectionate Uncle Screwtape
Uncle Screwtape is regarded as a senior demon directing his energy towards further corrupting his nephew Wormwood (a junior Tempter on his way to senior evil). These provocations will inevitably fall on an innocent victim (A British man) known as the “Patient.”
If we’re not careful to pursue Holy God independent of philosophies and being captivated by eloquence, we too can fall victim to the same evil ploys. As our entry was individually marked by new life, our departure ends with judgment on whether we’re suited for eternity with Holy God, or with Screwtape, Wormwood and the fellas. I’ve heard it said, “The older I become (particularly in the Lord), the less impressed I am with man.” King David said it best; “Against You, You only, I have sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.” Psalms 51:4

Today’s Thought Second Fiddle G. Ward
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.” Matthew 16:24
Parents are often so hilarious when trying to convey to their young people the level of sacrifice taken by them in establishing family values. Audaciously, it’s begun so early.  Little Jenny and Billy arrive at the dollar store with a parent. Without contemplation, the parent, in looking for a particular item passes the toy aisle. Jenny and Billy yell in unison, “Please Mommy, it only costs one dollar!” Although Mother’s early expression of limited funds was made crystal clear in the car, it meant nothing against the colors presented in the toy line.
I’m reminded on the time my Dad was driving the four of us to school. My sister Sandy (not the hurricane, but close) pleaded with my Dad the urgent need for money for a particular supply. My Dad countered with the traditional response, “Sandy, I don’t have any money.” Without hesitance Sandy told Dad to write a check. Why is it that transcendent to young people not understanding depletion, grown folk are equally as troubled? All that need are forever pre-occupied with what they feel you have and find it difficult when told you’re busted; they always feel you’re hoarding the last $569,328.59 (don’t you wish?).
Our Savior shares with us the necessity in allowing Him to be the Source of every supply as a result of His sacrifice. He pleads with us to further analyze our objectives over what’s truly needed. If we’re not careful we’ll further succumb to the Dollar Store scenario (reducing ourselves to adolescent thinking) as HE accompanies us through life’s journey, while demanding from the Master of the universe, “You have more to give,  Your sacrifice isn’t enough” (cf. Jn.19:30, Heb.10:26)! Happy Tuesday!

Today’s Thought Effective and Productive G.Ward
Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints; because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel
which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth.” Colossians 1:4-6
Encouragement is as it appears; the act of putting courage in someone. According to the grace shown us, it seems this would be easy to do. We however are bombarded with worldly contaminants that more exact caring for me and mine. Although our aim is heaven, our unpreparedness is exacerbated by our selfish pleas for instant gratification from Holy God as if He is our servant. The perpetuation of this, more than suggests that the pursuit of the Master’s way has been neglected (cf.Mt.6:21).
Encouragement demands that the promulgator remind the depressed to begin as if they’ve never fallen (cf. Ps.118:24, Php.3:12-13). Furthermore, it (encouragement, from the encourager) offers himself in the same way a splint enables a fractured limb functionality; it holds the victim of despair until one is able to endure, never to remind them of the mortal sacrifice given, but the ultimate sacrifice made.
O how He loves you and me
O how He loves you and me
He gave His life, what more could He give?
O how He loves you
O how He loves me
O how He loves you and me
Jesus to Calvary did go
His love for mankind to show
What He did there brought hope from despair
Happy Monday!

Today’s Thought Riding On A Donkey or Elephant… G. Ward
“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.” Psalm 127:1
The definition of politics by Gregory Ward: It’s an ability to deceive some (particularly in a Democratic society) into believing that an individual is with a necessary fortitude to unilaterally enact (impose legally) their own philosophy unto the citizenry in their municipality, state or country.
Howbeit that upon ingesting (educationally) the depth of government with checks and balances, that Americans exposed to trillions of dollars indebtedness (for more than 8 years) can contemplate exoneration of such in even 20 years vs. a potential 8? Moreover, for conservatisms’ loquaciousness to demand  the overturn of Roe v. Wade (410 U.S. 113 (1973), is a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court on the issue of abortion) without any prompting from varied legislators, particularly when in the majority (congressionally- Both Republican majorities in the House and Senate were held until the Democrats regained control in the mid-term elections of 2006.) epitomizes the essence of being a hoax. While liberals state incessantly, they’re the party for social reform and greater advocacy across socio-economic barriers, promoting better economic and educational prowess; and when their opportunity presented itself, little changed. Furthermore, morality was severely marred (President Clinton’s mishap = Monica Lewinsky) for many who now are more familiar in manipulating phraseology for their own benefit.
Ultimately, it makes me no difference as to what animal you ride on. I will however encourage you to  vote Chicago Style (Vote early and vote often carries a corrupt connotation, associated with the time used in relation to the activities of organized crime figures in Chicago.). Finally, remember King’s Solomon admonishing that strongly suggests no politician, nor anything can be ultimately fulfilling unless emanating from the Lord. Happy Friday!

Today’s Thought Absolute Recall G. Ward
“My son, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will prolong your life many years    and bring you peace and prosperity.”
Proverbs 3:1-2

May I impose a homework assignment on you that will aid in implementing the passage above? Regardless, you know I’ll do it because it’s my letter and if you say no, I’ll certainly not be embittered at your blatant rebellion, but will tell Holy God of your refusal (Lol).
Autumn is a perfect season in replicating God’s recompense towards man. The trees, very particularly are shedding their leaves in great numbers, while some remain, yet turning magnificent shades of yellow, gold and orange. The cool weather enables a reverse metamorphosis that reveals branches we didn’t see in late spring and summer. The appearance of lack of life is perceived in this season, yet that’s my argument for the similarity in God’s recompense towards man vs. autumn. Allow me a moment to dichotomize the trees vs. believers: Trees appear lifeless in autumn, while the inside still absorbs nutrients and light to enable future growth, awaiting its Maker’s change of weather to then produce more fruit (i.e. leaves, fruit, etc.). Man, is the same. He then can appear insignificant (i.e. lifeless, unproductive, etc.), while the inside is the better determinant (cf. 1 Sa.16:7), because His Maker is also His Source. Unlike the trees, man can/will forget the source of his supply and attempt growing on his own. The great thing about his Maker is His being faithful in His love towards man, always identifying with His creation’s repentance enough to save him from dying.
Back to the homework assignment; before next week, take a long walk in a park (preferably with a walking trail) and observe the trees, remembering this letter, while thanking Holy God for His excellent Gift – Jesus! Happy Thursday!

Today’s Thought Confidence Where There Should be None G. Ward

“For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins.” Hebrews 10:26

I love the game show, Jeopardy. Strangely, the answers are given by the host and it then becomes the responsibility of the contestant to propose completion of the trial with a question. There is often a disquieted spirit both on the show and in the room you’re in as brainiacs seek to win. I’m certain that with this game of chance study guides are given in advance so that the process of hypotheses is rendered fairly. Even so, one’s testing skill has to be superior. Jeopardy’s contestants can’t/should be ordinary Joe’s. Their intellect must be exposed to a plethora of subject matter, or just consider Wheel of Fortune.

Unlike games of chance, it doesn’t take individuals testing at superior levels to understand that Holy God’s love for them is without intellectual barriers; even idiots like me can identify with Christ sufficiency over man’s inadequacy. Although appearances may declare some as winners over others in the earth, there is but one status for man (“Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Heb.11:6). Be very careful with your exegesis of the Hebrew writer’s letter for the church at chapter 10. It doesn’t promote a theology of some having a potential towards sinless-ness; particularly the kind that blatantly violates to never be regarded again by Holy God. Throughout the chapter and in the first verses of this chapter, he synopsizes the entire letter synonymous with how Jeopardy invites guest’s participation (the answer comes first):”The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. If it could, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” (Heb.10:1-4).

Because of this, don’t consider sinful regression (willful) in thinking you can establish another way towards redemption (Jn.14:6) other than through the perfect Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world (cf. Jn.1:29)! Happy Wednesday!
Today’s Thought Insomnia G.Ward

“Because all his days his task is painful and grievous; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is vanity.” Ecclesiastes 2:23
The Bible are the words from Holy God unto man that is the truest panacea in every life pursuit. Every admonishment is for the benefit of his spiritual and physical well-being. Although we enjoy a new covenant (as compared with the Israelite’s moral and dietary guidelines), I believe reliance from the timeless Author of both (covenants) requires our implicit trust. He made us and knows our functionality without effort.
I’m contemplating the entirety of this because I’ve been alert from 2:30 a.m. I’ve learned not to resist, but to make it a productive time of convening with the Master. Many times I sought various sleep aides like warm milk. Warm milk is said to carry the enzyme tryptophan, which urban legend has it will cause you to sleep (and which is often the talk at Thanksgiving when people drop like flies after a large meal heavy in tryptophan-rich turkey). The truth is that tryptophan is only instrumental in the first phase of your potential sleeping, but can be harmful to deep sleep (as to deprivation) if ingested supplementally. Moreover, you’d have to eat about 40 pounds of turkey this November to feel the effects of tryptophan’s sleeping benefit. Then, there’s that great drink; chamomile tea! Chamomile tea is synonymous with how Aloe Vera was perceived in the 1970’s. Chamomile can be used topically or orally to treat a number of everyday ailments, such as: Insomnia and other sleep disorders, anxiety and panic attacks, muscle twitches, wounds, burns, and scrapes, skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, chickenpox, and diaper rash, stomach problems such as menstrual cramps, stomach flu, and ulcers. *Although scientifically proven as great in these matters of health, please note some of the side effects I copied and pasted below;
As with all herbal products, moderation is the key to avoiding adverse reactions. Some of the potential side effects of chamomile include drowsiness, so use it with caution if you are driving or operating machinery. High doses of chamomile can also cause vomiting and/or skin reactions in some individuals. If you are allergic to ragweed pollen or have hay fever, you may have difficulty using chamomile.

Using chamomile during pregnancy is not recommended, since it is considered to be an abortifacient (a substance that induces abortion). Chamomile is also not recommended if you are currently taking blood thinners, since chamomile contains a substance called coumarin (which is also a blood thinner).

Holy God’s prescription is timeless; For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Mt.11:30).
Insomniacs Unite! Decide that today is the day of reckoning! Nothing, but nothing beats good exercise and proper diet. Finally, remember King Solomon’s words (Eccl.2:23) that convey when you’re awakened at night because you’re perplexed and bothered, you take on unnecessary worries and neglect to realize that your Maker is able (cf. Eph.3:20-21)! Happy Tuesday!

Today’s Thought Profane or Misunderstood? G. Ward
“Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.” Ephesians 5:4
Have you ever encountered someone who uses great profanity, yet spoke with tremendous wisdom and compassion (perhaps oxymoronic?)? Could it be that the entirety of their life was filled with parents, aunts and uncles who did the same? Naval Sailors have gotten a horrible rap with the expression, “He/She cusses like a sailor!”
There’s a fellow I know who is dedicated to making a difference in our society, yet through his conveyances some obscenities have invaded our conversations. This gentleman is a retired military veteran (U.S. Marines) with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His gregariousness has him recognizing every attendee of the gym facility to which we are members. His transparency with most is selective, yet somewhat invitational. Although very polite to all, he (upon meeting me) felt a compelling in establishing a brotherhood with me; I too reciprocated. Rather to appear shocked in hearing some vulgarities emanating from his mouth, my first recall was Matthew 5:16, In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Moreover, I also knew that it would serve as an embarrassment for him if I quickly revealed that I am a Pastor. The objective I’m seeking is presenting a more excellent witness that diffuses a notion that I or anyone is with capability in transforming oneself unto righteousness unilateral of Christ’s sufficiency. When contemplating this brother or another please remember, “Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Co.6:11). Happy Friday!

Today’s Thought Christmas Wish G. Ward
“Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.” Psalm 27:14

The Christmas season for so many is/was the time of year where extraordinary things and circumstances occurred. Across socio-economic parameters, parents sought to please their children with tremendous presentations of gifts and exotic foods (indicative of the period). Smells, very particularly would permeate the entirety of the house; some rooms would present cinnamon, near the kitchen, baked goods, while even being amidst a dreadful odor of chitterlings cooking (for my Hispanic and Anglo friends, that’s cultural for most Blacks and believe me when I tell you they stunk!).
The season (when I was a child) lasted an entire two weeks (that’s before and after). We now are exposed to slightly before Thanksgiving sales to after the New Year. The commercialization of it all is serving as a definite distraction to the building up of family because of the stress of having to go to Jared (a popular jewelry store) and the like. The strongest anticipation of the holidays may be the dreaded contingency soon realized; particularly if (like me) money is short. I believe there to be a preparation for us all even before Halloween. We’ve must begin to contemplate the essence of the day, its meaning and a better desired effect. If it’s a celebration of the birth of Jesus, let’s communicate with our immediate and extended families an idea of reciprocity to the Honoree, Jesus our Lord. Preparing everyone in the now, will disable the pressure of later. W.W.J.D. (What Would Jesus Do/Say)? He’s said it already; “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Mt.25:40). Find others less fortunate and stay away from Jared! Happy Thursday!

Unnecessarily Manipulative

Today’s Thought Unnecessarily Manipulative G. Ward

A cartoonist some time ago constructed what to me was a brilliant work of art. It pictured a Pastor proclaiming God’s word from a podium unto hundreds of little babies wrapped tightly in cribs.
Often, this is my adopted expression for ministering to those who’ve said HE is Lord. Private meetings with congregants will often more substantiate spiritual immaturity than a willingness to serve (regardless). Grandiose ideas, attitudes and opinions are in-authentically articulated from congregant after congregant while many in leadership have to sit respectively, ingesting all this toxic waste. Rarely will individuals determine in their discourses that first fruit offerings of being a more excellent witness (in Christ) themselves resonate in their mindsets. What’s even more insane is the manipulative challenges that demand programming that ushers more numeric growth than spiritual (as if I need more facsimiles of them in our church). Like King Solomon, I too echo (concerning all these contrived notions); “Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless. ”What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun? Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever .The sun rises and the sun sets ,and hurries back to where it rises .The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again. All things are wearisome, more than one can say .The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing. What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say, “Look! This is something new”? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time. No one remembers the former generations, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them.” Ecclesiastes 1:2-11 Happy Wednesday (Remember, Make an Appointment = Etiquette)!

Etiquette: A Forgotten Behavior

Today’s Thought Etiquette; A Forgotten Behavior G. Ward
When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he
told them this parable:  “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not
take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been
invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give
this man your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important
place.” Luke 14:7-9
I’ve been criticized (primarily from my clergy friends) for having an open door policy concerning my approach to ministry. There are two factors that reign supreme in my contemplations with this behavior; 1. Our Great Savior makes Himself available to man (indiscriminately so) without reservation, but lovingly. 2. Pastors now and in times past forget their role as servants of His, forever counting the benefits vs. assessing the potential abuses and counting it a privilege in view of the Savior’s sacrifice.
There is however an earnest expectation of others existent from those of us who maintain a professionalism in this calling to fulfill. As physicians, attorneys and clinicians (psychological, social or governmental) have priorities to regard within a day’s structure, so it is in the lives of one’s local clergyman. Can you say with me, “Make an appointment?” When our approach to some who share the same vocation exacts partiality vs. similar respectability, we operate in the antithesis of Holy God’s word, forsaking blessings from on High. “The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching” (1 Ti.5:17).
“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you” (Heb.13:17). Remember, make an appointment! Happy Tuesday!

The Way that Seems Normal

Today’s Thought  The Way that Seems Normal G.Ward
“Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, and asked for letters from him to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, both men and women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.” Acts 9:1-2
A tremendous gratitude is owed to our fore-parents of faith. In America, we have constitutional amendments that demand religious expression as free. Our foundational leadership arrived on these shores believing in Jesus as Lord. Therefore, our celebrating either Christmas or Easter has become a no-brainer. Philosophically, we’ve imposed our celebratory views on agnostics, atheists, Buddhists, Muslims, etc., even to the degree of their organizations submitting to the commercialization of all these Christian festivities. Moreover, most industries in the U.S. are shut down in view of these holidays. In this modernity, we know have other countries near and distance that now (more than ever before) look to emulate this Western celebratory group of experiences.
As we look at the early church, I believe that our un-inhibited process of worshipping Holy God obstructs our remembrance of their difficulties. The early Christians enjoyed a new system of belief referred to as the WAY. Not a way, The WAY! The Roman Empire was attempting to be their social and political leader, dictating their religious philosophy and imposing cultural relativity at the same time. Imagine this new small group of believers now saying they have what centuries before didn’t have. They didn’t have a complete Bible like we enjoy, only a few parchments with prophecy on it. Judaism, on the other hand was acceptable; it contained a moral regimen that relied on a priest’s avocations unto God. Synonymous with that era, we’re faced with great difficulty in conveying great grace and mercy as free vs. a philosophy that has pervaded un-believers that suggests they have an ability to clean up before they begin going to church, which equals a works-righteousness; nullifying the sacrifice Jesus made for every man at Calvary’s cross (cf. Eph.2:8—9). This little group of believers (i.e. The Way) was then pompously and authoritatively declaring – no other way!
If then this little group (The Way) faced all this opposition, howbeit in our not being inhibited, that our mouths remain shut, while still proclaiming “we’re blessed and highly favored (cf. Ac.1:8)?” Happy Monday!

A Name Changed

Today’s Thought A Name Changed G. Ward
“Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.  All those who heard him were astonished and asked, “Isn’t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?”
Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.” Acts 9:19b-22As believers, we should glorify Holy God the more for enabling a security in knowing that His love and guidance is perpetually ours. Instead, many are plagued with demonstrations of disconnect with holiness that categorically dichotomizes small sin vs. great sin, while rarely contemplative over our Great King using a killer like Saul in establishing true recompense.
This character (Saul), I’m sure, was regarded by many believers of that day to be hopelessly controlled by self-righteousness. Religion (a perpetuator of self-righteousness), like politics, shares more partisanship than continuity. Islam, for example, began with many deities (more than 360 to be exact) being celebrated, until one Prophet (Mohammed) saw fit to destroy every other god by insisting those of that era celebrate his own god Allah, the moon god (a little leaven causes a great loaf). Saul maintained a similar conviction, seeking to destroy those not participating in surrender to his God. Believer-ship compels us in being transformed from any destructive mechanism to presenting a greater reconciliation (a message of peace, the gospel).
This same Saul experienced a name change that identified his transformation; becoming the Apostle Paul. In an epistle unto believers Paul wrote, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here” (2 Co.5:17)! Considering our having asked Christ to abide in our hearts as Lord has taken place and immediate acceptance on His part declared us as His own; could that re-birth experience (i.e. regeneration) be changed by another or a circumstance, considering our Holy Creator did this (cf. Ro.8:31-35,38-39)? Happy Thursday!

Progressive Moments

Today’s Thought Progressive Moments G. Ward
“You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4
What in the world have we done with the last sermon series we heard? With tremendous expectancy, many await a stirring discourse from their theologians (weekly) in determining their intimacy level with Holy God vs. a proven-ness that corroborates priesthood from every believer not contingent on a potential three hour involvement (every week) at one’s perspective worship center.
I’m certainly as guilty as any disseminator of truth in preparing messaging that utilizes different scriptural references to declare the mighty works of God. Sadly, there is often times a need for any of us to prompt varied Bible expressions to substantiate a singular passage. Every passage has enough context to affix our eyes on the matchless grace given us. This is not to say that utilization in cross passages is wrong; there is however great opportunity to remain with the lesson text, thus nullifying argumentative behavior from those seeking to refute anything not emanating from their pompous thought process. They’re easily distinguishable by prefacing their discourse with “yeah but,” foolishly discounting a passage offered earlier and ultimately designating Holy God as a liar (because the entirety are His words unto man, maintaining a perfect context and cadence).
Be sure that your demands on any theological discourse matches the perspective of the Bereans of Thessalonica; “Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so” (Ac.17:11). Happy Wednesday!

True Authority

Today’s Thought True Authority G. Ward
“When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.” Matthew 7:28-29
Knowing the end of the story (solely relative to the Bible) may enable an unnecessary castigation from us in this New Testament era concerning those in the day of Jesus who failed to see Him as we know Him. Those Old Testament recipients were amazed because this Jesus was uneducated, had no religious accolades, held no title/office and originated from a non-descript region (Galilee).
A better perspective to contemplate is our daily blatant denial in trusting Him in all matters in view of knowing Him as Savior and having the completed script (the Bible). We know Him as Final Authority, but lack a complete surrender to Him as Lord (i.e. Owner of our life). I truly recognize their having been amazed at His teaching as reverence (perhaps minimally); mine, on the other hand (shamefully so), very well might be interpreted as familiarity that leads to lethargy from time to time (i.e. cheapening grace), to which I’m repentant. It (this attitude of un-gratefulness) substantiates for me the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church found in Philippians 3:13-14, “Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Happy Tuesday!

A Ship Without a Rudder

Today’s Thought A Ship Without A Rudder G. Ward
To you, Lord, I call; You are my Rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if You remain silent, I will be like those who go down to the pit.” Psalm 28:1
Upon accepting this tremendous calling to fulfill (namely the pastorate), I’ve found it necessary to retreat periodically. It’s important often times to walk away so that great appreciation for the work may continue. The expression “familiarity breeds contempt” can apply when lacking retreat (or re-evaluation).
It was last April (Spring Break). It was a great time to impose my philosophy unto my Associate Pastor and his wife to join my wife and I on an inexpensive cruise to the Bahamas. Our family had enjoyed many cruises in times past, in that they tend to be quite inexpensive, yet rewarding. Pastor Mark and Priscilla were overjoyed at the thought of a cruise because they never experienced one before (although they were world travelers). The cruise lines are very excellent at informing all their passengers about the many tradespeople at every port (i.e. reputable vs. irreputable). Many seasoned (i.e. idiotic & cheap) passengers such as me, always know more than the experts, so I authoritatively demanded we skip that informative meeting aboard the ship, and all my dumb friends were compliant. Upon arrival at the port, we paid too much for a taxi unto Paradise Island, rented jet skis from a guy named “Shark-eye,” received some bogus equipment to then turn over in the sea (in the Bahamas), to then almost drown why asking Holy God this question; “Lord, am I going to die over here in the Bahamas?” The Lord apparently said no, because two gentlemen from Shark-eye’s team immediately arrived at the point of my imminent departure from this earth to what I thought was an attempt to rescue me, when in actuality they were seeking to get their jet ski because it turned over and was becoming water logged! Read Psalm 28:1 again! Happy Monday!

Expectancy

Today’s Thought Expectancy G. Ward
And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, “Look at us.”So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them.
Acts 3:4-5
Many years ago, I facilitated a bible study at a local multi-housing unit’s clubhouse. Every Wednesday night upon arrival, I would prayerfully walk throughout the complex and upon seeing individuals, invite them to share with us. Needless to say, there was more rejection than compliance, but the few made the difference. On one autumn Wednesday night, my wife and I decided that we should get the boys and ourselves bed ready, as our return home would yield no time for folly. With fresh garments on and cleanliness underneath, I sought sharing a discourse about our Savior’s mercy and grace. It’s because the night was beautiful and the temperature outside was holding at 72 degrees, that we decided to keep the main door open. This would also afford other residents passing by opportunity in hearing some good news. The ones of us on the inside were attempting to enjoy the message, but there were 2 gentlemen (obviously inebriated) on the outside offering loud cynicism. It had come to be totally disruptive, so I excused myself unto our audience, but beforehand had the wherewithal to ask them to pray as I would address these two. My family was terribly stressed, in that they knew of my propensity of preparedness in altercations of any kind. I too went into prayer asking Holy God to not allow me a chance at messing this up. Upon approaching these gentlemen, cynicism yet prevailed in their expression. I then remembered a book I recently read by Robert Coleman, entitled, The Master Plan of Evangelism . Dr. Coleman spoke of seizing every opportunity to share Jesus, even through social agendas. Moreover, no matter the conversation, en-route to sharing truth should always be the objective. I utilized current social etiquette and the lack thereof to introduce my first line of question. I asked them to share with me how they had grown up; what was their religious experience? Their answers were captivating. Both grew up attending church with their mother and grandmother. We then talked about the individuality in knowing Holy God (disallowing their scrutiny of church attenders). Both gentlemen replied in the same; they foresaw a time whereby their surrender to Christ would happen. That night without reservation, both of them identified their sin towards Holy God and invited His absolute rule. Both wept profusely as the joy was unspeakably clear – “What a mighty God we serve!” I left that night along with my family reeking of liquor and a stench of uncleanliness, although initially desiring to return home prepared for bed. Happy Friday!

We Need a Word

Today’s Thought We Need a Word G. Ward
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You. “But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
Matthew 12:38-39I’ve been terribly guilty in preparing sermons whereby content promotes more consumption than contrition. In my world (particularly our congregation), those sermons are generally followed by a host of many hearty congratulations. Most are ecstatic that the compelling thesis is pertinent towards those refusing reconciliation unto righteousness. Rarely adopted is a philosophy that demands that all of us are standing in the need of… Moreover, salvation’s portrayal in church life identifies a simple measurement, reasonably attainable through mere confession, without regarding a process of eliminating (entirely) the old man (i.e. his attitude, behaviors and worldly disciplines – cf. Ro.12:2, 2 Co.5:17). I’m reminded of the congregation of the Prophet Ezekiel’s era that were comparably enthralled as some modern day believers; “As for you, son of man, the children of your people are talking about you beside the walls and in the doors of the houses; and they speak to one another, everyone saying to his brother, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain.  Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.  And when this comes to pass—surely it will come—then they will know that a prophet has been among them” (Eze.33:30-33).
As theologians like me lack an attentiveness that would better lead those listeners to the activity that should accompany faith, we’ll find those congregants malnourished, sipping on impure pseudo water; that inflames the abdominal area with toxins (Hos.4:6). There however is a more prudent response; ingesting proper food (manna from on High- cf. Jn.6:31) and pure drinking water (cf.Jn.4:14) that trusts implicitly in the Provider. Happy Thursday!

Hoarding

Today’s Thought Hoarding G. Ward
“These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” 1 Peter 1:7
I’ve inherited my Dad’s sense of style. I’m meticulously dressed in an argyle sweater vest with a short sleeved silk shirt underneath, small squared paneled, dress slacks that accentuate the colors of my vest and dress sandals matching the entirety. I’m clean shaven and smelling marvelously. My office is professionally decorated; the wood is shining and several decorative lamps are lit to bring forth true ambience. Although aesthetically pleasing to view, some may question my motives. Why, because, before anyone is familiar with any level of mercy and compassion, they view my exterior. For many either socially deprived, or economically depressed, these kinds of exterior components can be entirely intimidating. Moreover, many who cross such a threshold may presumptuously regard this sophisticated fellow as self-serving and aloof. Without shedding a great defense of who I really am, I’ll say that my heart’s desire is to be totally available unto Holy God’s great appointments.
Upon arrival here on today, there was a gentleman who stopped by, dressed similarly as I, driving a Hummer (an expensive SUV). He was without gas and needed something to eat. Without reservation I gave him my last and my Associate Pastor did the same (someone say with us, “Thank God for the food pantry” = lunch for the both of us). Furthermore, just a while ago, another lady arrived having lost her home recently. Her current rent is very behind, utility payments past due and food being scarce. Considering our circumstance in needing immediate reprieve in this area came to surface. She however remembered me from more than six years prior. Her struggle then was as great. I was able to lend better support then as I recall, but had to briefly convey to her that my resources of old had diminished tremendously. As Peter and John declared at the gate called “Beautiful,” there is always something to render because every beggar (this includes all of us) has expectancy (cf. Ac.3:1-8). Folks, I didn’t waste this lady’s time; I was able to meet some of her needs, but not the entirety. The genuineness of our faith (cf.1 Pe.1:7) demands that our attention towards others excuses every opportunity to castigate, while extending greater grace already demonstrated on high (cf. Ro.5:8). Oh yes, it arrives often times with great abuses, but how many times are we to arrive at the great throne of mercy after having messed up, begging Holy God to rescue us? Happy Wednesday (I’ve got to go and figure out what I’m going to wear on tomorrow…)!!!

Whose Report Will I Believe

Today’s Thought Whose Report Will I Believe G. Ward
“A man who hardens his neck after much reproof
will suddenly be broken beyond remedy.”
Proverbs 29:1
There was a theory published in the 1950’s that sought to  determine the probability of Americans contracting coronary heart disease by classifying participants in two categories; type A, or type B personalities. Type A would refer to individuals high strung and Type B would be representative of the easy going. Rendering a hypothesis to the question of who then would be more prone to coronary heart disease seems unquestionably clear. Cardiologists Meyer Friedman and Ray Rosenman conducted a study of healthy men between the ages of 35 and 59. Friedman and Rosenman estimated that Type A behavior doubles the risk of coronary heart disease in otherwise healthy individuals. This theorizing was later found to be inaccurate, in that coronary heart disease had other confounding variables (i.e. diet, gender, family history, etc.). I would definitely be classified as a type A personality (Type A individual as ambitious, rigidly organized, highly status conscious, can be sensitive, care for other people, are truthful, impatient, always try to help others, take on more than they can handle, want other people to get to the point, proactive, and obsessed with time management.) vs. type B (Type B personality by definition generally live at a lower stress level and typically work steadily, enjoying achievements but not becoming stressed when they are not achieved. When faced with competition, they do not mind losing and either enjoy the game or back down. They may be creative and enjoy exploring ideas and concepts. They are often reflective, thinking about the outer and inner worlds. Furthermore, Type B personalities may have a poor sense of time schedule and can be predominately right brained thinkers. Friedman, M. (1996). Type A Behavior: Its Diagnosis and Treatment. New York, Plenum Press (Kluwer Academic Press), pp. 31 ff.). According to these theorists from the 1950’s, personality types like me don’t have long. I’m so glad science is inconclusive; type A personalities would worry themselves to death. Furthermore, awaiting any theorist’s opportunity to decide our fate, contradicts Holy God as final Authority. As believers our desire should be to exact a personality indicative of our transformation (through Christ Jesus, cf. 2 Co.5:17). Happy Tuesday!

Degenerative

Today’s Thought Degenerative G. Ward
“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34
Upon awakening it was a dark, dismal, rainy day. Rarely in Georgia does it rain for more than an hour, but it appeared that it would rain all the day. There can often be an immediate subliminal adoption of the gloom the day presents. I, on today typified that gloom. It brought forth remembrance of those I loved so dearly that have passed away. Moreover, it reminded me of the brevity of life enough to aid in more excellent praise for having loved in this way. Amazingly, minor psychosis (although I never received such a professional prognosis) exists from time to time, in that feelings quickly go from happy to sad (at an instant).
These deeper contemplations should lead us in examining our potential end; as many will at one day reflect on us as a presence of the past. Prayerfully, my gloom (of today) will serve as a strong reminder to seize every moment possible in a way that would verbalize to loved ones how special they are. Happy Monday!
